  • what's on my needles: I'm (slowly) working on baby boy's baby blanket. It's modified from The Little Songbird's pram blanket - basically I doubled the pattern, and though I'm not very far along, I love how it's turning out.
  • what I'm crushing on: Kendra Scott's seaside inspired line of jewelry. I'd love to have this asymmetrical long pearl statement necklace, these coral drop earrings or this tactile orb stackable ring duo
  • what I'm looking forward to: A break in the heat - though I'll have to wait until October for that one...only three-ish more months...

they can't all be winners

black and white stripe dress, long blush cardigan 7

Some outfits I post on here feel like a real home run - the lighting is great, the outfit photographs well and I feel pretty confident in what I'm posting - and then there's outfits like these. Those days when it's kinda gross outside, the hair is lackluster at best and the outfit is blah. But you know what? All the outfits can't be winners. Some days you just have to rock the slouchy dress, messy hair and a big 'ol dose of blah.

Today makes 24 weeks pregnant, so here's a quick bump update: Baby boy is approximately a foot long (so big!) and the size of an ear of corn. He's been super active lately and I'm starting to see his movements, which is fun. He's been a bit shy whenever husband tries to feel his kicks, but I'm sure he'll be feeling them soon enough!

midi skirted belly bump

chambray shirt, cream dot midi and wedge sandals 4

For those of you who have followed this space for awhile, you know adore midi skirts. My obsession began last summer and since then have added quite a few to my closet - red, polka dotted, pink pleated, teal - I went a bit wild. But with sadness, I packed them away for the move and didn't anticipate being able wear them again until after the baby was born.

That is, until I started seeing all these adorable midi skirt maternity outfits on Pinterest and became obsessed with trying it for myself. The question was, which skirt? Enter this cream, dotted midi skirt back bought back in March, but unworn before it was packed away with the rest of my midis. Which really bugged - beyond annoying to have wait at least nine months, if not longer, before finally getting to wear it. So when I decided to try out a maternity midi skirt outfit for myself, I knew I had to rip off the tags and wear this one.

Sadly, my skirt is no longer available, but I did find some fun alternatives for you:

While I'm not 100% convinced I'm pulling it off, it was nice to wear something different than my ever present jersey dresses and kimonos. So that has to count for something, right? :) That and the fact that I fixed my hair for the first time in weeks. I don't mind the wavy, but this definitely feels more like me and sometimes you just need to fix your hair and pull out an old favorite look to feel more like yourself (and less like the beached whale I keep telling my husband I feel like).

monday musings: week 24

monday musings_header

Welcome to Monday Musings! Each Monday I share a different "get to know you" style Q&A. I invite you to join in the comments below so I can get to know you as well.

Q: What do you like about where you live?

monday musings week 24

A: This question is timely since summer in Florida is especially hard for me - even more so while pregnant. It's so dang HOT, tourist season is in full blast and I start to fantasize about places like the Arctic. My husband and I joke that we reverse hibernate - all the outside things in the fall/winter and glorious air conditioned indoors during the worst of summer.

So it's good to reflect on the things I do like about living here: the unbelievable ocean views, a job that I actually like, my beautiful new home, Disney World within driving distance (hello Florida resident rates!), not to mention St. Augustine - one of my absolute favorite Florida spots - and we have moderate winters. All good things. So right now might not be my favorite Florida season, but there's still plenty to look forward to - beach days, 4th of July fireworks, cookouts (I got my husband a grill for Father's Day) and rainy summer days that make it cool enough to go adventuring. :)

What do you like about where you live? Let me know in the comments below.

back to black

maternity black dress, black kimono and embellished sandals 4

In the summer time (okay I know it's not officially summer, but it sure feels like it), I tend to gravitate toward lighter, brighter colors, floral patterns and seersucker stripes. But for this outfit, I decided to go back to the basics with an outfit of all neutrals with a strong emphasis on black. Because sometimes a girl just doesn't feel like all the colors - and you can't go wrong with basic black, right?

Random side note, when my husband was taking these photos he wanted to know why on earth I had bunnies on my kimono - which I can kind of see it - but I assure you they're flowers, not wildlife. :) I managed to score this kimono for a mere $13 dollars from Forever21. Mine's from the plus section and is unfortunately now sold out, but the non-plus version is still available and only $17 if you're interested.

Today makes 23 weeks, so it's time for another bump update. Baby boy's checkup went well yesterday, his heartbeat was 155 and he was determined to kick while the nurse was trying to capture his heart rate. :) He's approximately the size of a large mango (yum!) about 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound - though my bladder is convinced he's 10 times that size! I've been feeling him kick and move a lot lately, which makes the whole thing seem so much more real. October is going to be here before we know it!

maternity blue maxi dress, white red kimono 5

This outfit feels a little ra-ra- go 'Merica with all the red, white and blue going on, but I can't say I'm mad about it. :) I had a different kimono planned for this outfit, but after searching high and low to no avail - days later I found it buried under a blanket at the end of my bed - I instead discovered this white/red/pink one buried in the bottom of one of the plastic tubs I still haven't unpacked from the move. (Confession: most of my clothes are still aren't unpacked. Opps.)

My big excitement for the day is the anticipated arrival the teal velvet storage sleeper sofa I ordered over a month ago to go in my office/craft room/guestroom...okay mostly craft room. I've been pinning yarn storage options like crazy. :) But seriously, how pretty is this sofa? I got an incredible deal on it, on sale with an additional 20% + free shipping. I ordered a swatch beforehand it it's more teal in real-life - the online picture looks very blue. I'll post photos to Instagram once it arrives! *insert happy dance*

monday musings: week 23

monday musings_header

Welcome to Monday Musings! Each Monday I share a different "get to know you" style Q&A. I invite you to join in the comments below so I can get to know you as well.

Q: What would you like to be when you "grow up."

gift shop inspiration: one  |  two  |  three  |  four

A: While I love my job doing marketing/graphic design for a university, one day I want to own my own gift shop. Maybe as a second career after the kiddos are grown, though you never know where life will take you. :)

My first taste of working at a gift shop was in high school when I first worked as a gift wrapper during the holiday season then later on the sales floor at a high-end gift shop at the mall. But I didn't really fall in love with the idea until college when I worked at a place at the top of a mountain kinda in the middle of nowhere in Tennessee. The owner was fabulous - she let me create my own displays, run the place by myself, help with buying decisions and even go to market.

Her location was perfect - she was the only game in town - unless you drove down the mountain - but better yet she had great products - gorgeous jewelry, funky purses, candles and knickknacks - she even printed custom invitations (before the popularity of etsy and pinterest). Her stuff was cute, not stuffy, affordable and people just genuinely seemed to love shopping there and I equally loved working there.

So, for 10+ years now, that idea has percolated and grown in my mind as what I want to do someday...maybe years from now, but maybe I'll get a wild hair and do it sooner rather than later, it sure would be fun!

another day, another kimono

purple maternity dress and cream floral kimono 1

Kimonos have become come my maternity outfit best friend. While I haven't been posting all my outfits featuring kimonos, since I don't want to wear you out with all my outfit sameness, it's seriously been a daily occurrence. Kimono with knee-length dresses ✓. Kimono with long dresses ✓. Kimono with jeans  ✓ and ✓. Not something I wore a lot of before pregnancy, I can't help loving how cool and lightweight kimonos are - plus bonus points for how they balance the ever growing belly and add some interest to an otherwise boring outfit. So here am I, in what is likely to be the first of many jersey dress, sandals and kimono outfits - basically my summer maternity outfit uniform on repeat. :)

Today makes exactly 22 weeks pregnant! Baby boy is approximately 11 inches, almost 1 pound and about the size of a spaghetti squash. I'm still feeling well, though I've resorted to a third pillow in the bed - much to my husband's dismay. One for the head, one to clutch and one between the knees - my husband calls them the "third wheel" because they have a tendency to take over. :) Aubrey's finally accepting her big sister fate and after many weeks of denial is starting to get excited about having a baby brother. She likes to point to my belly and tell me that "brother lives in there." So cute.

currently june

currently I am...

planning: baby boy's nursery. At the moment I'm leaning toward navy and white  - which I think will go well with our gray walls and big sister's hand-me-down white furniture. :) I especially love the dotted rug in my inspiration cute! I found a similar version at PBTeen...tempting...

wishing: for more rain. It's been so dry in north Florida, though Monday night and this morning we had some really good downpours. I'm loving how the rain sounds on our new metal roof - it's so soothing and relaxing.

learning: how to make paper lantern jellyfish for the kiddo's mermaid birthday party. They're actually super easy to make, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with them now that they party is over...they're almost too cute to throw away...

browsing: for something good to read. I just finished the "Jane Austen Project" and am now reading "The Heist" - but I like to have my next book lined up before I finish the last, and am not sure what to read next. Suggestions?

going: to Publix to pickup the makings for baked ziti. My sister and her crew are on town and coming over tonight for dinner and to see our new house. Though, I'm most excited to finally get to meet my new nephew - can't wait to get a hold of that squishiness!

mermaid birthday party

mermaid party 1

This weekend we held a mermaid birthday bash for our own little mermaid's 3rd birthday. It was a whirlwind trying to get the house together (maybe having a party two months after moving in a new home that needs work wasn't the wisest of plans?), decorating and putting the food together. Not to mention trying to do it all while pregnant. Whew! It was a bit of a blur - thank goodness my parents were in town to help! Sadly I didn't take nearly enough pictures (we were living the memories instead of taking them I suppose) and not everything came out exactly as I wanted, but the kiddo had a great time - and that's the most important thing. :) She had a blast playing on the bouncy house with her friends, blowing bubbles and sneaking in cupcake seconds. So overall, I'd consider the party a success!

mermaid party 17

I did a quick google search for party invitation inspiration, then designed and printed them on cardstock. The turquoise envelopes I found on sale at Hobby Lobby. It was the first time we invited friends as well as family, and we had more boys than girls which gave me a giggle since the party was a such a girly girl theme. :)

mermaid party 2

The balloon backdrop was inspired by this pin. I found the pink, teal and purple balloons (the aqua ones are leftovers from her first birthday party) as well as the sparkly sequin tablecloth on Amazon. Forgive the incomplete table, I was rapidly snapping photos before the guests came while my sweet stepmomma finished the sandwiches. Also, I should have gotten a larger table for the food, so we re-purposed the wicker hamper to hold the plates, napkins and silverware. I also think a solid plastic tablecloth underneath the sequin one would have helped block the light so you couldn't see the table legs. Oh, well, live and learn. :)

mermaid party 14

I made the felt starfish and seahorse - you can read about it here. I was having issues getting the balloons to stay behind the net, so I just attached them with a bit of a bit of twine and tucked the starfishes and seahorse into the netting.

mermaid party 3

These paper lantern jellyfish are another pinspiration find. Confession - I may have stayed up to midnight the night beforehand to make them. Where they necessary for the party? - nope- but still fun!

mermaid party 4

The necklaces and wands doubled as decor and party favors. Another DIY, the starfish wands are resin ones I found at Marshalls - half of which I spray gold - then hot glued ribbons and dowels from Joann's. The sweet mermaid doll is from Target, which immediately become Aubrey's once the party was over - she just loves it! The necklaces are a combination of pastel beads I strung together as well as some Dollar Tree finds. The wooden chest is from Joann's and the purple crate is from Hobby Lobby.

mermaid party 6

The food was under the sea inspired: carrot stick "crab legs," chips and gold fish became "fish and chips," peanut butter and jelly sandwiches "star-wiches," crescent dogs "sea snails" and so on. I already had some of the platters and my stepmom lent me the rest. Joys of living near the beach, meant we already had a bunch of stuff that would work perfectly. :) The food cards are just some cardstock I had on hand and wrote on with a white chalkboard marker.

mermaid party 8 mermaid party 13 mermaid party 5

Betty Crocker's butter cookie recipe is my favorite for cutouts. I already had the stars and hearts, and found the mermaid tail cookie cutter from Amazon.

mermaid party 7

I ordered the cupcakes from Publix, but made the chocolate tails with a mermaid tail mold from Amazon and the pirate toppers are from Hobby Lobby.

mermaid party 11

The gold foil pastel napkins and plates are also from Hobby Lobby and the gold plastic silverware and gold scallop jar from Target. The white metal container is another throwback from her first birthday party (originally Hobby Lobby).

mermaid party 10

The purple mason jars are from a bridal shower which I updated by hot gluing net and twine (tutorial here). The blue mason jar is old, but still available at World Market. The teal plastic tablecloth is a Target find which I tied with a piece of twine and topped with netting.

mermaid party 18 mermaid party 9

The bubble wands are from the Target's dollar spot, the foam swords and eye patches from Hobby Lobby, the green and pink jars are from the Dollar Tree and the bubble wands I found on Amazon.

mermaid party 16 mermaid party 12

But the star of the party was by far the bouncy house - which we borrowed from our neighbors. The kids spent the whole time running around like wild things - bouncing about, using the swing set and playing with bubbles.

mermaid party 15

All that non-stop playing meant one sweaty little toddler (who blew her birthday candle out long before we finished singing "Happy Birthday"). I completely forgot to get a picture of her in her mermaid tee and tutu - much less pictures with any of her friends or family. Once the kids arrived we were all too busy to even think about it until the party was over. Opps!

I hope you enjoyed her birthday party pics. We had a blast and it was a lot of fun to put together!
